6 April 2010, Prof. Onno Omta from Wageningen University and Research Centre gave an academic report entitled “Key Success Factors for Innovation: Wageningen Innovation Assessment Toolkit” for teachers and students from College of Economics & Management. Prof. Qing Ping presided over the report.
Prof. Omta firstly introduces the latest development of horticultural industry in the Netherlands. The Netherlands is the world's second largest farm produce exporter with horticultural exports account for one eighth of the total. Over half of Dutch horticulture products are cultivated in the greenhouse, most in "closed greenhouse" and "heat-producing greenhouse." "Closed greenhouse" blocks summer sunshine and stores it underground to supply heat for winter. It retains CO2 and reduces energy, water and pesticide consumption. "Heat-producing greenhouse" with shelves makes full use of space and is suitable for densely populated areas. Controllable light and temperature in the greenhouse enable the plant to grow well. Innovation in open-air gardening also advances in the Netherlands. Ultraviolet light crop protection, for example, reduces production cost with less chemical residue and extensive application in any weather.
Dr. Omta elaborated on “Wageningen Innovation Assessment Toolkit (WIAT)”, which improves the innovation success rate by about 10 to 30%. Taking a French agricultural enterprise as an example, Dr. Omta specified four steps of WIAT. The first step is to conduct structured interviews of management personnel, including management innovation, innovation processes and innovative business strategy adjustments. The second move is innovation capability analysis. Management personnel state their views on innovation capability and assess their value. The third part is innovation projects performance analysis. A comparative study of successful and failed innovation projects will be conducted to find out critical factors to success. The last step is innovation process analysis. Successful projects and failed ones will be compared with the average level of the project respectively.
The report ended up with Q&A session. The teachers and students expressed their appreciation for its aspiration in their future study and research.
